Converting your Hobby to a Profitable home based Business: Some Points to Ponder

December 19th, 2007 · 1 Comment

A lot of people like making soap or candles at home. At first, they tried it out as a lark and found that they liked it enough that it became a hobby. Some of these people have converted their hobbies into a successful business. A testament to this fact is the numerous websites in the internet that are dedicated to soap and candle making or jewelry home based business. Of course, making the candles or the soap is the easy part. Building and running the business is the hard and tedious part of a hobby turned business.

Determination plays a large part in successful changeovers from hobby to business. You must be determined to convert a hobby into a business. Behind that determination, a motive should exist. The motive could be anything from wanting to share the products of your hobby to making money from something you like doing and quitting your full time job. If you have both motive and determination, then all you need to do is put your plans into action.

Some people say that test marketing the product of your hobby is the hardest part of putting up the business. In reality, test marketing can be the easiest part if you know how. All you have to do is to narrow your target market. This is called niche marketing. Instead of targeting a general audience, you go to the people who will most likely buy your products. For soap and candles, this would mean the home makers, soap and candle stores, foundations or organization that deal with sanitation and religious organizations. Niche marketing gives you an audience that is more responsive to your product. While the numbers of the audience in a niche market may be smaller, the chances of getting a response are higher. Perform your product testing within your niche market. Who knows, the people in your test market may be one of your first clients.

Generally speaking, it is harder to start a business from scratch when compared to starting a business that is based on a hobby. With a hobby business, the product already exists. The need for pre-market testing is significantly reduced since the need to figure out which niche market to target is effectively diminished. With a hobby, the need for knowledge and skills to create the product already exists. Since you yourself know how, you don’t need to hire consultants and special labor to get the job done.
