A guide to herbal sleep aids

January 16th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Sleep deprivation can lead to irritability, lack of concentration and other such factors as well as some major disorders. Medicines can help insomniacs but they also carry with them some unpleasant side effects like nausea, dizziness and diarrhea. Most sleep medications don’t aid in getting a restful sleep but are in fact sedatives and leave you feeling groggy.

Nature has a lot of herbal remedies that can aid in getting a good night’s sleep. Some of the common herbal remedies are chamomile given in the form of tea helps induce sleep and also soothes stomach irritants. Valerian is another herb that helps induce sleep and can be used on a long term basis as it has no side effects. People with chronic insomnia are known to use this herb to good effect. Short term relief can also be found if taking melatonin as a supplement.

SAMe (S-adenosyl-methionine) works in conjunction with melatonin in the body to provide a restful night; this can also be taken as a supplement and is known to balance the circadian rhythm of the body. Lots of foods contain tryptophan which lowers the levels of serotonin in the body and helps relax the body for a good night’s sleep. Some of the foods that this is found in are dairy products, soy oatmeal and turkey.

Depending on the degree of severity you can use short term or long term herbal remedies. With the overwhelming choice it is a good idea to consult an herbalist, naturopath or a doctor to recommend what is best for you if you are unable to choose.
