Tips and Techniques for Driving in Rain

February 6th, 2008 · 1 Comment

It has been raining and the road is wet. A thin film of water covers the asphalt, and the tires of your car losing traction. You have been driving all summer, and during this time, when it has started to rain, you need to be careful. Rain reduces your perception. It is difficult to get adjusted when it starts to rain, especially with the poor visibility. The head lights shine on the road surface and the glare makes it more difficult for you to properly gauge the road. You will slow down your car, but there is other few things that you need to take care of.

You will need to maintain extreme caution when you drive in the rain. During summer, the long dry spell has left engine oil and grease on the road, and the rain has made the roads unsafe. The road has become slick. The first few hours of rainfall are dangerous.

When it is raining, give yourself more time to reach your destination. The traffic in front of you would be moving slower than usual. You must know that you might not adhere to your pre-planned route to reach your destination.

Do not apply your brake suddenly for if you do that, your car might skid. You should apply the brakes from much before and in a controlled way. This would stop your car at a safe distance between yours and the car at the front. As you apply your brakes, let the driver behind you know that you are slowing down. You would need to use your turn signals without fail when it is raining or otherwise

Avoid puddles made by rain water. Most of the roads in the US are crowned at the middle. Rain water runs off the sides to make puddles. Stay on the middle of the road as much as you can. . After you have crossed a puddle, you would need to tap on your brake pedal few times to dry off your brakes.

Never use your cruise control. This makes the car to accelerate and that is not desirable in wet road conditions. Cruise control also takes away the driver’s attention from the road, which makes them less vigilant. Keywords:
