Are Rear-Seat Passengers in your vehicle Safe?
The primary consideration of safety has been for the front seated passenger in a car, and the one in the driving seat. Since most of the time a car is involved in a frontal crash, these two occupants have been the main focus in safety.
The occupants occupying the rear seats do not have those advanced safety features as the ones at the front, but that does not mean that they are not safe.
Occupants occupying the rear seat of a car are at risk of injury when the car is involved in impacts closest to them. This could be a rear impact, side impact, or a roll over. With these, the passengers who are most affected are the ones sitting at the back of the car, having a greater chance of serious injuries. Though the rear-end collisions are considered to be secondary crashes, statistics show the roll over collisions were more alarming than the rear impacts, since these accidents have a higher rate of life risk.
A statistics taken in 2004 shows that, just 16.5% of the accidents were side impact types, but that resulted in 39.5% of injuries to people. The total number of crashes affecting the passengers at the rear seat is about 22% of all the crashes that has taken place in the year 2004.
